"They call me Sitanya Face because...I enjoy getting my a$$ eaten...but it's the best way to shut up anyone who doubts you. May his face be your throne! Thank you so much for tasting my talent you have an acquired taste!"
- A QUEEN ONCE SAID
I remember watching my grandma put on makeup in the bathroom mirror. It made me gay.
But also, I loved seeing the confidence it gave her. I tried on her heels, my mom's summer dresses. I was onto something. I pushed it away for years. It was a mission during the day to come up with at least one funny drag name.
I told the guy I was with back in 2019, "Wouldn't it be on brand if I called myself Sitanya Face!?" He laughed it off but almost like a nervous laugh. It made him uncomfortable--queer culture. Gay bars and clubs. He told me he didn't want me to do it because he didn't want me to receive "negative attention." I talked myself into the mindset that I'd be a joke.
When I ended an engagement to that man, the Valentine's Day of 2020, I entered a drag competition. Sitanya Face set foot on the stage and never looked back. Sitanya was born out of heartbreak but infuses Alex's original poetry into performances paired with lipsyncs. I want audiences to really feel. And poetry healed Alex and, in turn, Sitanya, so why not foster that? Hurt turned into beautiful art...with a touch of glamor.
Sitanya Face became the NYC drag poet on the scene.
